Jack Barton played for Saints on just one occasion during the second season of the Northern Union. He was at full back for the away league match against Oldham at Watersheddings. The Saints lost the game by 11 points to nil before a bumper attendance of 15000. The St. Helens newspaper talked about several changes being made, “the most important that Foulkes left his place at full-back to go to centre threequarter, his place being taken by Barton of the ‘A’’ team”.
The St. Helens Reporter correspondent gave him a good write-up: “for a first appearance I have nothing but praise for Barton, who played coolly, kicked well and with judgement and has the appearance of making a great player. His tackling was his weakest spot”. Alas Jack returned to the reserves the following week after his sole turn out for the seniors. It also appears that he is the elder brother of the great Tom Barton, who won an England cap several years later with the Saints. He later went on to sign for Castleford. The reason is that the family had actually lived over in Yorkshire for a spell. Another of Jack’s brothers, Fred, who was born in Castleford, also went to play for the Saints. Can you help with a photograph of Jack or any other personal or playing details?
