Further Info: Had 2 spells with St. Helens. His first period with the club stretched from 1925 to 1933 in which he was to score a remarkable 271 tries in just 261 matches. He then signed for Wigan as the St. Helens club needed his transfer fee to survive. He rejoined St. Helens in December 1937 and he played on for another 13 months in which he scored a further 9 tries in 28 matches.

Biography

Alfred Edward Ellaby by Dave Dooley:
Alf scored 50 tries in the 1926/27 season and 280 in 289 matches. Lancashire, England and Great Britain winger and an Australian tourist in 1928 and 1932, Alf was dubbed the Hat-Trick King, with 31 for his home-town club. Arguably Alf Ellaby was the first local-born rugby league 'superstar'.

He had been a soccer player with Rotherham United until a serious knee injury put an end to his football career. However, Alf was treated and cured by Recs trainer Ted Forber and Ellaby turned his hand to Rugby League. Alf Ellaby was a stalwart for the club playing over 250 matches as a classic winger. He made his debut against Keighley on the 27th. March 1926.

Alf demonstrated electric pace and great agility, he could pick up a ball on the ground without breaking his stride. In 289 matches for the Saints Alf scored 280 tries, kicked no goals for a total points aggregate of 840 points. This strike rate at almost a try per game is unsurpassed in Saints ranks.

In his international; career Alf won 13 caps for Great Britain and many Lancashire caps. He was transferred to Wigan in the mid 1930s to help ease the Club's financial burden but returned to Knowsley Road to complete his fantastic career.

His final match for the Club was against Huddersfield on the 28th of January, 1939.
