Part of the first wave of players recruited from Wales after the Second World War, WJ Jones was a strong and mobile second-rower from the Llanelli club. He joined fellow Welshmen Elwyn Bowen, Glan Jones and Len Constance at Knowsley Road and made his debut against Halifax at Knowsley Road 26th October 1946, which Saints won 15-8. The forward pack for that game was as follows: H.Fishwick, Dilorenzo, Pilkington, Jones, Leyland and Mills. The 1946-47 campaign was blighted by the weather, with fixtures being played into the early summer months. John made 22 appearances for the club during the campaign and scored 6 tries. His second-row compatriots were the likes of Len Aston, Tommy Leyland and Ernie Mills. His last match came against Barrow at Knowsley Road on 31st May 1947, which the home team won at a canter 36-7. John later became the Player Manager of the fledgling Llanelli Rugby League club for the start of the 1949-50 season. His former Saints colleagues Elwyn Bowen and Glan Jones also signed for the club.
