Born in Parr, John Smith, or Jack as he was known, Smith played a creditable 96 matches for the Saints between January 1903 and January 1909. He generally played in the forwards but did have several matches at full back, presumably because he had a good pair of hands and he was sound in defence. John scored three tries for the Saints against Barrow, Leigh and Keighley. Towards the end of his career at the Saints he tried goalkicking for a while and succeeded with 19 conversions. This total included 7 goals in a match against Aberdare.
With John Smith being a not too uncommon name. We think our man was raised in Park Road, Parr and was an Iron Pipe Fitter by trade. We would welcome any verification that this is `Our Jack`` and any images or life details.
