Biography of Jack Atherton

HERITAGE NO : 569
Jack Atherton by Alex Service

A forceful second-rower or centre threequarter, Jack Atherton played his rugby for the old St. Helens Recs team when they were members of the league before the War. He was an employee of Pilkingtons, as senior foreman in the Electrical Department at Ravenhead.

Like many during the war years, he played where needed, hence the games for the Saints. Indeed, it stated in the press that he was actually on leave from his naval duties at the time. After the end of hostilities, he resumed his career with Liverpool Stanley and Warrington, before retiring in 1952. Jack, who lived in Billinge Road, Pemberton, was closely connected with the Pilkington Recs RL club in the early to mid 1960s and also played cricket, golf and snooker as part of the recreation club's provision for a wide range of sporting activities at Ruskin Drive. Those definitely were the days. He died in St Helens in May 1995, aged 74.
