In the first decade of the Twentieth Century, the Saints made many varied signings, including a cache of Welshmen. According to the St.Helens Committee, each signing was going to be the proverbial world-beater and, of course, this rarely happened. Yet Tom Browning made a favourable impression during his 62 matches for the club after signing from Abertillery RUFC. After his debut against Leigh in a convincing 30-0 victory on 24th February 1912, he received due praise in the St.Helens Newspaper: 'An excellent centre. Everything he did was splendid. He ran passed and kicked like a Trojan, while some of his fielding off the floor, when going at top speed, was wonderfully done and he saved his side more than once when the ball had been punched past Turtill.'

His first season saw him at left centre, with winger Billy Wyatt outside him. The famous Yorkshireman Jimmy Greenwood was in the other centre position. In 1912-13, he switched to stand-off with great success, making 30 appearances and scoring 7 tries. His partner at scrum-half was Joe Richardson, himself a former Abertilley player and Monmouthshire county representative. The 1913-14 campaign saw Tom restored into the centres with two wingers, Bert Roberts and Jimmy Flanagan outside him at various times. Tom returned to Wales and signed up with the Royal Engineers in World War One. He was a saddler by trade and before he joined the Saints he was living in Princess Street, Abertillery. The St. Helens Reporter on 17th March 1931 informed us of his death aged 44 back home in Blaina. If you have any further information about this player, we would be glad to hear from you.
