Biography of William Burke

HERITAGE NO : 58
William Burke played three first team matches for the Saints 1898. His debut was the home league match against Tyldesley. His final match was the 11 points to nil victory over Runcorn. Burke played centre to the great David Traynor that day. William also scored a try in a victory over Wigan in March 1898, that was classed as a friendly match. He was a resident of Atlas Street, St Helens and a Copper Works Labourer according to the 1901 Census. The local newspaper described him as a flyer and a talented jumper, hailing from the Parr district, so wing was a good position for him.

William led a tough life and official mining records cite three accidents which William endured as a miner down Lea Green Colliery.

William died in St Helens in 1931 at the age of 59. Can you help the SHS by supplying any other personal or playing details?
