Biography of Jimmy Carney

Some of the first information about this player is to be found in the St.Helens Newspaper on 16th August 1901 which stated that: "As for the forwards, Carney has come back from fighting the Boers." Clearly, rugby matters would be a piece of cake after such adventures in South Africa. Born in St.Helens, Jimmy Carney is quite rightly regarded as a favourite of the St.Helens club in their early post Northern Union days just before and after the turn of the century.

His debut was on 25th September 1897 at home to Tyldesley, when the Saints won 11-0 at Knowsley Road and Jimmy scored a try. A forceful forward, he went on to make 178 appearances for the club, his last at Warrington on 23rd December 1905. Unfortunately the visitors lost 0-16 on the day and Jimmy suffered the injury which ended his career.

News of his demise is found in the St.Helens Reporter, whose headline on 24th November 1931 read 'Football Idol's Sad End. Carney Dies Almost Friendless.'

The article continues as follows: "Cheered by thousands in his younger days when he played as a rugby forward for the Saints, Jimmy Carney died almost friendless in the Whiston Institution last week. He was fifty three years of age." A correspondent who knew Carney in his better days refers to the accident that befell Carney when he was in his football prime, putting him out of the game for ever. The correspondent thanks the Reporter for the sympathetic references to Carney's career and death and adds: "Had it not been for the kindness of some relatives who were in constant touch with Old Jim during his last brief illness and supplied his wants, he would have died almost friendless. I appreciate the Reporter's kindly references to him. I'm sure that were it possible for Old Jim to know that he was remembered he would have plucked up sufficient courage to battle against the loneliness that overcame him in the end. Jim Carney befriended many a man when he was in his pomp, but had it not been for his sister in law, nobody would have known of Old Jim's whereabouts, she having to make special enquiries herself, thus you will understand that otherwise he would have had a pauper's funeral and Old Jim never deserved that. In accordance with Carney's last wishes, he was buried in his mother's grave at St.Helens Cemetery on Saturday, the cortege proceeding from his sister in laws home at Cowley Street."

Unfortunately, his former employers Greenall Whitley, for whom he worked as an odd job man did not know the time of the funeral and their representative turned up with a wreath from the firm, but arrived to find the service concluded and the mourners gone. Jimmy had obviously changed appearance since finishing playing. The Reporter continued in the Sports Section: "Poor Jimmy Carney who died on the day they buried Kitty Briers was quite a character in his day and his flaming red beard will be a familiar sight to be missed as well as his pungent comments on play."
