Biography of Shane Cooper

HERITAGE NO : 1002
Shane Cooper by Dave Dooley:

Shane Cooper was the ultimate stalwart for the club playing over 250 matches mostly as a stand off or loose forward. He made his debut for Saints against Leigh on the 18th. October 1987. Interestingly, Cooper then proceeded to tour the country with the Auckland touring side before resuming his career at Knowsley Road. Shane was a masterful tactician with nimble feet and superb game awareness; it was inevitable that Shane would captain the Club. He was extremely durable and rarely missed a match throughout his career. This was largely down to the fact that his timely distribution greatly reduced the number of occasions that opponents had the pleasure to tackle the elusive Kiwi. His impish behaviour on the field was a stark contrast to his quiet demeanour away from Knowsley Road. In 271 appearances Shane scored 76 tries and dropped 6 drop-goals for a total of 310 points. This tally included a six-try haul against Hull which equalled the Club try scoring record for a single match.

He began playing scrum half for the club but soon reverted to the number six stand off role. Saints` coach Alex Murphy recognising Shane`s leadership and tactical awareness made him captain of the side. In no time at all Shane was leading the side to the John Player Trophy Final at Central Park, Wigan. A magnificent defensive effort held off a tenacious Leeds outfit who were hell bent on pulling back Saints` half time lead. Thus within two months of being in the team on a full time basis, captain Cooper held aloft the trophy following a nerve jangling 15 points to 14 victory. One month later in a midweek fixture Saints entertained Hull in a home league fixture or rather Shane Cooper demonstrated a masterclass in support play to equal the club tryscoring record for a single match with six tries. Saints prevailed by 64 points to 2 that night and the crowd left the stadium wondering just how good the man from New Zealand really was. Towards the end of the season Saints were pressing for the Division One Championship when Shane returned to his homeland. Saints promptly lost three successive games to Wigan, Widnes and Leeds and consequently had to settle for the runners up spot in the league; such was the influence on the field of this little maestro.

Shane returned for the 1988/9 season with high hopes of leading the Saints to bigger and better things. However, this campaign brought about a reality check for all at Knowsley Road as Saints had a miserable season finishing seventh in the league and being whitewashed by the old enemy Wigan at Wembley. Shane`s efforts could not be faulted with a return of 14 tries from 35 matches. This haul included braces against Salford and Warrington. Murphy tried different combinations in an effort to turn the tide and tried Cooper in the loose forward position in the second half of the campaign.

The experimentation with player combinations continued in the 1989/90 season with the team playing no fewer than 36 players over the campaign. Although ending up close to the top of the league as the highest scorers, some inconsistencies were denying the team of the big prizes. Shane returned eleven tries from 33 appearances but had a hand in may more. January 1990 also witnessed Cooper drop gaols in three successive matches. He was top of the appearances chart for the club during the following season as the Saints rattled up the points unfortunately the side was defensively stretched in many games and 11 losses in the league left Shane`s men in sixth position. After a fabulous 19 points to 2 semi-final win over Widnes in the Challenge Cup semi-final, Saints fell at the final hurdle as Wigan held on to a handy half time lead to prevail by 13 points to 8. Many felt that Wigan were there for the taking on that day and this made the club even more determined to bring some silverware to Knowsley Road.

This ambition was soon fulfilled in the following campaign as the Saints had a blinder against Wigan in the Lancashire Cup semi-final. Unbelievably, Shane had to sit on the sidelines to watch his team overcome the old enemy but he was fit enough within a fortnight to lead the Saints to a 24 points to 14 win over Rochdale Hornets in the Lancashire Cup Final at Warrington. He scored four braces of tries against Halifax, Bradford, Wakefield and Leeds out of a haul of 13 tries. The side also settled down that season and finished a comfortable second position in the league but still somewhat adrift from Wigan at the top.

Shane gave one of his finest displays in the Boxing Day match against Wigan in 1992. He was dictating play all over the pitch as Saints whipped the boys from Wigan by a fabulous score-line of 41 points to 6. Everyone felt that the balance of power was finally shifting westwards over Billinge Lump after that game but at the end of the season Saints lost out to Wigan on points difference at the top of the table following an 8 points all drawn match at Central Park. Some consolation came however in the last match of the season as Shane captained the team to the 1993 Premiership Final win over Wigan by 10 points to 4. It was a well deserved victory and Shane`s determined shake of the Cup as he exhibited it to the Saints` following characterised the motivation that drove the Kiwi to want success even more.

The loss of Gary Connolly in the backs and Kevin Ward in the pack was too great for the following campaign as Saints slumped to eighth place in the league. Youngblood was the order of the day and Shane Cooper was acting as their main mentor on the field. At the end of the 1993/4 season Cooper was again disappointed as he stared at an empty trophy cabinet. Eric Hughes continued to introduce new players to the fray in Shane`s last season at the club 1994/95 and again Shane led the troops in their rugby league education. The acquisition of players of the calibre of Scott Gibbs, Apollo Perelini and Bobbie Goulding showed that the Saints were serious about mounting a determined bid to end Wigan`s monopoly of the Rugby League silverware. The announcement of moves to revolutionise the game with a new summer era in a fully professional context signalled the end of Shane`s Knowsley Road career. At thirty three years old Shane left the club in the close season after driving the Saints roller coaster for the past eight seasons. During this time he was virtually an everpresent in the side playing 271 matches( 41st on the al time list), scoring 76 tries but creating four times as many. He had established himself as one of the greatest ever leaders on the field for the Saints and is rightly considered to be one of the club`s all time greats!

A great character on the field Shane was one of cheekiest chaps to saunter out of the tunnel at Knowsley Road. His antics included incidents where he hid the ball to slow down play and pinched the ball of the opposing scrum half and fed the scrum for the Saints. Although he was smaller than most contemporaries Shane Cooper was most certainly a larger than life character.
