Biography of Wilf Fields

HERITAGE NO : 634
Wilfred Fields, more often known as Wilf, played his only game for the first team in the league home defeat to Workington Town by 20 points to 5 on December 22nd, 1945. He played at full back in this match. Beforehand, he had impressed in an A Team game against Widnes when he kicked three goals. The St. Helens Reporter describes him as "a young full-back still in the Army." According to Mike Latham, Wilf came from Wigan amateur circles and played for Leigh, kicking six goals on his debut against Oldham just before Christmas 1940. He had to wait nearly four months for Leigh's next game, kicking one goal in an 18-8 Challenge Cup tie defeat at Hunslet, the club's last game before closing down for the duration of the war. Wilf also made five appearances for Broughton Rangers in the 1941-42 season, kicking three goals. In 1939 he was employed as a bricklayer and he was living in Crawford Road, Wigan. He died in Wigan in August 1986, aged 66.
