A former pupil at Rivington Road School, Bill Finnan was a stalwart for the club playing over 100 matches mostly in the centre position. After his signing from local club Pilkington Recs, he made his debut against Whitehaven on the 24th. December, 1949. The following season, November 17th in fact, he was transferred to Salford for a fee of a thousand pounds but returned to Knowsley Road some years later in time to partake in Saints` first Challenge Cup Final victory over Halifax in 1956.

In 124 matches for the Saints Bill scored 58 tries for a total points aggregate of 174 points. He was renowned for his inspirational breaks from the midfield that often led to another `three pointer` for the majestic Saints. The tough tackling Bill was also known for his party piece of running with the ball on the flat of his hand out in front of him.

Bill managed to earn one cap for Lancashire whilst at the Saints. He was also a member of the team that chalked up a record defeat for the Australian touring team by 44 points to 2 on the 2nd. November, 1956.

His final match for the Club was against Widnes on the 16 May, 1958. He was transferred to Liverpool City to continue his career. In 1939 Bill was living In Rivington Street, St Helens and still attending school. He died in his hometown in July 1972 at the premature age of 43.

Footnote: Bill, like his brothers, Vincent and Thomas, was in the Navy during the war and, for a spell, the then eighteen year old was on HMS Sparrow, a sloop of the American and West Indies Squadron. Sad to report that Thomas lost his life and was buried in Crete before his 21st birthday.
