Biography of Jimmy Flanagan

HERITAGE NO : 171
Jimmy Flanagan by Dave Dooley:

Jimmy Flanagan was a stalwart for the Club prior to the First World War. Many would argue that Jimmy was the first great Saints` winger with an impressive scoring rate for that era of Rugby League. He made his debut against Oldham on the 5th. September, 1908. It was a disastrous start as Saints crashed at home to the tune of 38 points to nil. In 231 matches for the Saints Jimmy scored 125 tries, kicked 3 goals for a total points aggregate of 381 points.

Jimmy scored four tries on three occasions for the Saints. The first of these triumphs was the 21 points to 9 away defeat of Barrow on October 2nd., 1909. He repeated the feat in the 18 points to 10 home defeat of Warrington on February 10th., 1910. Finally, Hunslet were the opponents at Knowsley Road when Jimmy notched another four tries in a 24 points to 2 victory. Jimmy`s top points scoring achievement was on April 10th., 1910 when he scored a hat trick of tries and kicked his only three goals for the Club in the 33 points to 20 extravaganza at home to York. Jimmy scored five hat-tricks in total for the Saints. This feat was a rarity in those days!

Flanagan was a gifted individual and could play in a variety of positions. Jimmy played 151 matches on the wing (99 tries), 76 games at centre (25 tries) and four games at stand off (one try). He played on the flanks for his first four seasons and then moved infield for most of the next three seasons.

Jimmy played most of his final three seasons in the centre berth for the Saints. His final match for the Club was against Huddersfield in the record defeat Rugby League Challenge Cup Final on the 1st. of May, 1915.

Tragically, Jimmy Flanagan was killed in action during the First World War. Lance Sergeant Flanagan (service #20984)served with the South Lancs Regiment and died on the 14th. of May, 1918. He was buried at Arneke British Cemetery in Northern France.

Jim Flanagan by Alex Service

A local product, who played soccer in his youth, Jim Flanagan had all the attributes of a great winger. At five feet eight in height and eleven and a half stones, he was quick, elusive and had excellent handling skills that would make him a fine centre later in his career. The young Flanagan made his debut in a 38-0 loss at home to Oldham at the start of the 1908/09 season, on the left wing and rapidly became established as a First Team regular. In 1909/10, the fair-haired flyer scored tries like they were going out of fashion, with 31 from 35 matches a stunning statistic, putting him third in the League`s try-scorers list, the highest-ever placing for a St.Helens player at the time. The team also reached the dizzy heights of tenth in the league table, a measure of the tremendous attacking power provided by the threequarter line. Indeed, Flanagan`s marvellous form continued in 1910/11, with 30 tries from 34 appearances and he formed a devastating partnership with Yorkshire-born centre Jimmy Greenwood that was feared throughout the league.

His scoring exploits earned him a County Trial for Lancashire, where he caught the eye of the selectors with two stunning tries. His county debut came against Cumberland at Barrow in October 1909, on the left wing, one of six appearances in total for the Red Rose County over the next five years.

It was his biggest disappointment that international selection eluded him, although Jim did play against the visiting Australian tourists on two occasions, scoring a try in Saints` spectacular 9-0 victory over the Kangaroos in February 1909. He was truly devastating at club level, playing 151 matches on the wing (99 tries), 76 at centre (25 tries) and 4 as a stand off, scoring a try. Jim notched 4 tries on three occasions and five hat-tricks during his seven years as a Saint. His superb fitness also meant that he rarely missed a match in that time.

Honours with St.Helens were relatively few and far between, including a couple of beaten Lancashire Cup semi-final appearances, although he took part in the Saints` famous Challenge Cup run in 1914/15 as centre to Tom Barton, when the team reached the final, only to be well-beaten 37-3 by Huddersfield`s Team of all the Talents. It was to be his last match for the club. Like his former team-mate Jum Turtill, Sergeant Jim Flanagan paid the ultimate sacrifice while serving his country in the Great War, when he was killed by shrapnel on May 14th 1918 at just 31 years of age. Jim will always be remembered as one of the true `greats` of the pre-First World War era at Knowsley Road, a superb footballer, who served his club and county admirably. The gallery shows several artefacts regarding Jimmy and some were shown at the Family Heritage Day held in August 2019.

On 17th July 2022 Jimmy Flanagan was inducted into the St Helens Player Association's prestigious Hall of Fame and his Grandson Jimmy was presented with a special framed montage of his career.
