Biography of Tom Foulkes

HERITAGE NO : 1
Tom Foulkes by Dave Dooley and Alex Service:

Tom Foulkes was a stalwart for the Club prior to the First World War. Many would argue that Tom was the first great Saints full back and captain. He made his debut against Rochdale Hornets on the 7th. September, 1895 as part of the first ever fixtures under the auspices of the Northern Union. It was winning start as Saints emerged victors by 8 points to three.

A great character he often played matches in his flat cap! In 301 matches for the Saints Tom scored 3 tries, kicked 32 goals for a total points aggregate of 82 points.

Tom was captain of the Saints in the first ever Challenge Cup Final on the 24th. April, 1897 when Saints went down to the `Gallant Youths` of Batley by 10 points to three. Tom represented Lancashire as as Saint.

Tom was born in the year 1871 and was signed from the Ravenhead St.Johns club. He retired following his final game against Salford on 30th of April, 1906. His grandson Billy was the famous Manchester United centre half. Tom worked as a joiner in later life and the 1939 Census saw him residing at the #1 Cottage, Eccleston Hill, St Helens. Tom Foulkes died on the 13th of October, 1953 aged 81.

How times have changed! On 23 April 1904, promotion-chasing St. Helens thrashed Lancaster 36 - 2 at Knowsley Road in the Second Division of the Northern Rugby Football League. The match had been set apart for the Benefit of Tommy Foulkes, the veteran full-back who was to retire at the end of the season after fifteen years service to the club. Thatto Heath-born Foulkes began with St.Helens in 1889/90, the last season at the old ground in Dentons Green, before the move to Knowsley Road. His previous experience of football was with his local Ravenhead St. Johns club as a half-back.

Despite breaking both wrists in his first season, a start which would have ended many players career, he settled down to become one of the finest full-backs in the North of England, with a strong kicking game, coupled with resolute defence. County honours soon followed and he represented Lancashire on eleven occasions, ten under the Rugby Union. He was on the losing side just twice, both against Yorkshire.

For seven out of his fifteen seasons, from 1896-7, he was club captain. His first season as skipper was a memorable one as Saints reached the Challenge Cup final against Batley, only to lose 10-3 to the more powerful Yorkshire outfit. Although bitterly disappointed with the result, Tom was the first to congratulate the Batley players after the final whistle.

Tommy was a fearless dashing footballer. The spectators loved him and and he repaid them with unswerving loyalty - despite offers from elsewhere. In the early part of his career in the so-called amateur days, he made a few appearances for the crack Oldham club. In the dressing room after one game he found a sovereign in each boot, together with an invitation to go for a slap-up meal in a posh Manchester hotel.

Such inducements proved most attractive to young Foulkes, especially when they offered him a job to go with a place in their team. He decided he would throw in his lot with the Roughyeds, and went to Shaw Street station with his luggage to catch the train for Oldham. Although he was sorely tempted, the money was not everything. The prospect of leaving his close pals Kitty Briers and Ned Ashcroft did not appeal to him that much. He promptly returned home, unpacked his bags and asked for his job back at Cannington-Shaws bottleworks, where he was an apprentice sorter. That was Tommy Foulkes, a St. Helens man through and through! Tom also served on the Committee of the St.Helens club for many years and his grandson, Bill, found fame as a centre-half with both Manchester United and England as a member of the Busby Babes. A Life member of the St.Helens club, Tom died in 1953 at the age of 81 and is buried at Christ Church, Eccleston. His close friend Billy Briers is buried nearby.

The following are some comments made about Tom's career from an interview with his son in the early 1980s:

'My dad received constant inducements to join other teams. Oldham were always after him and after one match, he found a sovereign in each boot and they offered him a job and there was also a letter to go for a feed in a posh Manchester hotel! He decided not to join the Roughyeds ' more or less at the last minute and he was then at the railway station with his bags packed. The old team changed in a pub, usually the Talbot Hotel and were taken to Knowsley Road by wagonette. I remember he told me that he once had to 'sort out' a few members of the opposition whilst in transit! Dad was a Life Member of the Saints and he attended games up to a fortnight before he died. He was, by all accounts, quite fearless, but he suffered quite a number of injuries too. He always said: 'never let a ball bounce', which was his main piece of advice to young players. He was really fed up after Saints lost the 1897 Challenge cup final and always maintained that a certain player was 'got at' before the game. The same player got changed rather quickly and made a quick exit from the dressing room, although it was conjecture on his part, of course. He also remembered a running match between forward Billy Briers [his close friend] and winger Tom Sudlow, which took place at Park Road.'.

When one considers Oldham's interest in the player, the St. Helens Lantern gave the following quote from its edition of 14th November 1890 that would undoubtedly give credence to the theory: 'It was certainly a good exhibition and thoroughly deserved the opinion expressed by the genial President of the Oldham club, who said: 'Foulkes is the finest full-back we have seen this year''.
