Biography of Johnny Gaydon |
---|
HERITAGE NO : 781 Johnny Gaydon by SHS Rhodesian-born Johnny Gaydon was another of the raft of South African players who came to play in the UK in the late 1950s and early 1960s. A fleet-footed wing threequarter, but slightly-built, Johnny always found the competition strong for a berth on the flanks at Knowsley Road, with fellow-South African Tom van Vollenhoven and Mick Sullivan at the club. He made his Saints' debut in the toughest of circumstances away at Halifax on 18th March 1961, which the visitors won by 19-12 in front of over 12,000 fans. Johnny scored a try together with Vollenhoven. Johnny's last match for the Saints was away at Whitehaven on 7th October 1961, when he stepped in for the injured Vollenhoven on the right wing. Although he didn't get his name on the scoresheet, the visitors won a tough encounter 10-3. 'In the A Team at Saints, his centre was on more than one occasion Ernie Forber,' recalls Denis Whittle. 'Gaydon, Fletcher, Forber, Pimblett was the threequarter line.' Johnny signed for Widnes and eventually enjoyed a successful Testimonial at Naughton Park after playing 313 matches scoring an impressive 111 tries and even booting over 5 goals. He wore a beard, which was quite unusual in those days and was a car salesman. Gaydon joined some of his former Saints' team-mates at Widnes, like Alan Briers and Jim Measures. It is believed that once he finished at Widnes, he went back home to South Africa. Overall, Johnny was a capable winger, who found it just too hard to get that elusive 'break' and stay in the First Team at Saints. He played in 13 matches and scored 5 tries in his relatively short spell at Knowsley Road. |
