Biography of Albert Grimes

HERITAGE NO : 570
A signing from the Platt Bridge ARLC, Albert played four matches for the Saints between April and October 1943. The Wiganer played centre, wing and scrum half demonstrating the turnover of players and the flexibility of players of the day. Albert scored one try in the match against Dewsbury but failed to collect winning pay in any of his matches.

For the match against Dewsbury, a powerful team of the day, assembled by Manager Eddie Waring, the threequarter line was made up entirely of junior players, collected from seven-a-side competitions. Albert was the brother of Tommy Grimes, who played for both St. Helens Recreation and Wigan. He worked as a Colliery Banksman and in 1939 he was living in Roundhouse Avenue, Whelley, Wigan. He died in Wigan in May 1985, aged 62.
