Biography of Don Gullick



HERITAGE NO : 692
Don Gullick was a tough as teak Welshman who played in the threequarters during the first half of the 1950s. He generally played centre but was known to turn out on the wing when coach Jim Sullivan saw fit. Don was renowned as a bone crunching tackler with good distribution skills. He was a key player in the side that began the great post war trophy collection trail at Knowsley Road.

His medal collection included winners for the 1953 Championship Final when the Saints collected their second Championship by defeating Halifax by 24 points to 14. He also struck gold in the same year when the Saints overcame Wigan in the Lancashire Cup Final by 16 points to 8.

Don could also finish well in the try stakes. His 42 tries from 140 matches included braces against Salford, Widnes, Hull, Batley, Warrington, Wakefield Trinity and Liverpool City twice. Moreover, his neat final passes opened up the tryline for wingers like Steve Llewellyn and Stan McCormick.

Don moved to Leigh in 1955. [Heritage Number 651] and later played for Leeds.

In 1939 Don was living in Wellington Road, Pontypool and still attending school. Eventually Don returned to South Wales where he died in Torfaen, Gwent in July 2000, aged 75.
