Biography of Trevor Hall

HERITAGE NO : 381
Trevor Hall by Alex Service

Second rower or loose forward Trevor Hall arrived at St.Helens in a blaze of publicity just before the start of the 1929-30 season, with two other New Zealand-born players, Lou Hutt and Roy Hardgrave. They helped the Saints to become a real force during the campaign and the team reached Wembley only to be beaten by un-fancied Widnes. Yet before the semi-final there was controversy when the three overseas players went on strike because they had not got the jobs they were promised when they first joined the club. Fortunately matters were resolved and the team beat Wigan in a famous replayed semi-final at Leigh and marched to Wembley in fine style.

Trevor did tend to pick up more than his fair share of injuries with St.Helens and at one time Trevor went home to New Zealand at one stage thinking that his football days were over. Yet he returned to the fray after one season and he became an international rugby league player both in England and back home.
A powerful and versatile forward, Trevor became Rochdale Hornets Team Manager in the 1937-38 season and later became a licensee in the town. He returned to New Zealand at the end of the Second World War.

There is an update to the initial information provided here. We are indebted to Kevin McSweeney, a close friend of Trevor's family, who has helped us to build a much bigger picture of Trevor and his family background. Kevin visited St. Helens in August 2010 and to Knowsley Road in particular: "It was a shame that it was raining, but this would no doubt be typical of the weather that Trevor would have played in," he reflects. "It reminded me of winter conditions in New Zealand. It was an overwhelming thrill for me not only to see the ground itself but also to realise that I was actually seeing where Trevor would have been many years ago. Trevor was certainly associated with the great players of rugby league while he was with St. Helens."

Trevor was born on 24th February 1905 in Cambridge, New Zealand. His father, Thomas and mother, Mary, both came from Britain. Thomas was a farmer and two years after Trevor was born, he was killed in a tragic accident on his farm, when he fell off his wagon and was crushed by the wheels. "The copy of the death certificate of his father indicates that there were 9 children still living in the family," reveals Kevin. "Trevor was two years old. A brother had died earlier."

Trevor married Kathleen, who pre-deceased him. His death certificate tells us that he died on 15th November 1961, aged 56, as a result of a cerebral haemorrhage, although other illness had also been a factor. Described as a salesman, he lived at 19, Liverpool Street, Papakura, where he was eventually buried.
