Biography of Albert Halsall

HERITAGE NO : 831
Albert Halsall by Dave Dooley:

Albert Halsall charged like a bull but had the ability to side-step like a ballet dancer. He was signed in the middle of the 1965/6 season in an attempt to find a coherent front row permutation, as honours were begging for any team that could get its act together in the closing months of the season. In the last full season of unlimited tackle football, possession from the scrum could often be a deciding factor in the result of a match. Albert and Bill Sayer were brought in to team up with all time great Cliff Watson. Albert who was signed from Salford on the 28th of January 1966 made his debut in the five points to 2 away victory over Halifax on the following day.

The remainder of the season became a dream come true for Albert. His remaining twenty matches brought winners medals in the Challenge Cup Final, League Leaders Championship, the Lancashire League and the RL Championship Final. His powerful drives were a feature of his game and one such burst created the position for Billy Benyon to grubber kick for Len Killeen to score a memorable try in the 21 points to 2 demolition of Wigan at Wembley. A second drive provided space for Alex Murphy to drop a goal and rub salt in the Wigan wounds. One week later in the Championship Final, Saints were trailing by 7 points to 3 to Halifax in the 1966 Championship Final at Swinton when Halsall steamed on to a short pass and sped 20 yards for his first touchdown for the club. Albert added a second try just before half time to open up a comfortable lead for the Saints. After 52 minutes of the Final, the big 15 and a half stone prop combined power and nimble feet to sidestep his way to an impressive hat trick. The dominance of Albert’s play that day earned him the Harry Sunderland Trophy as the Finals outstanding player.

The following season brought the Saints another Lancashire League Championship as Albert scored four tries in 32 appearances. The next two campaigns witnessed Albert suffering with injuries as he played in just 19 matches. However, Albert bounced back in style in the 1969/70 season. His trademark bursts and tenacious tackles helped Saints reach the 1970 Championship Final against a powerful Leeds outfit. The team prevailed in some eerie climatic oddities that brought four seasons in one match to Odsal Stadium. A famous 24 points to 12 victory provided Albert with his second Championship medal.

When Albert had played his 122nd and last match for the Saints in the 1970/1 season he had enjoyed honours galore for his club and three caps for his native county Lancashire.

Albert later signed for Swinton, where he played in a Lancashire Cup final in 1972-73 against local rivals Salford. The Red Devils won 25-11. Sadly, Albert passed away in Wigan at the end of August 2011 after a short illness at the age of 69.
