Biography of Michael Hanley



HERITAGE NO : 266
Michael broke into the Saints` first team at the end of the First World War. His speed found him a niche on the left wing. His first match was aginst Widnes in a friendly and this began a run of five matches at the conclusion of the 1918/19 season. His first touchdown for the Saints came in one of these friendlies against local rivals St Helens Recs.

The next campaign of 1919/20 saw Michael establish himself as a regular in the team. In 23 matches that season Michael scored well-taken tries against Swinton and Salford.

His last season, the 1920/21 campaign, at Knowsley Road consisted of five first team games. Michael crossed the line in a league victory over Widnes. His final match was a notorious one in Saints history. The New Year`s Day match against St Helens Recs saw the Saints go down by a record 39 points to nil! Following his departure from Knowsley Road, Michael signed for Warrington where a cartilage injury to his right knee finished his rugby playing days.

He worked as a chemical labourer. Michael died at his home in Gower Street, Sutton Oak, St Helens, on the 24th of July 1958.
