 HERITAGE NO : 355 William Harrop by Alex Service A front-row forward, his debut was certainly memorable. It was at Featherstone Rovers, on 10th December 1927, when the Saints were eventually crushed 15-3 in a match later described by Premier in the St. Helens Newspaper as "Forty minutes football and forty minutes fighting." Premier later added: "The football took place in the first half, the fighting in the second, the lusty-lunged supporters of the colliery village team apparently preferring to take their football that way, providing there was victory at the end of the fighting." The Reporter wrote this about the debutant: "Harrop, who deputised for Houghton, suffering from tonsillitis, played a strong and whole-hearted game. He was always in the thick of it. It is a pity, however, that he had not an extra yard or two on his pace." Harrop played two more matches for the club, the last at Recs on Christmas Eve, 1927, which the Saints lost 2-5. We do know that Harrop was signed from Warrington, for a fee of £75, but for whatever reason, he only played three matches for the Saints. The Minutes of the Club [17th September 1928] later revealed that: "W. Harrop. Secretary read letter from this player applying for kit to use in training. Resolved that this must not be granted and that the player must be placed on the open to transfer list at a fee of £40." Clearly, for whatever reason, things had not gone smoothly for him at Knowsley Road. In 1939, William was a Wire Drawer and living at Dalton Bank, Warrington. He died in Warrington in March 1987, aged 83. If anyone has an image or any further information about him, we would like to hear from you. |
