Biography of David Hull



HERITAGE NO : 894
David Hull was a schoolboy star and joined the Saints from Pilkington Recs in May 1973. He was a great all-round footballer, with pace, good hands and an effective tackling technique.

David played 105 matches for the Saints between October 1973 and March 1977. His excellent all round ability meant that he could fill into several positions if need be and he played at loose forward, in the second row and in the centres with equal effectiveness.

David collected a winners medal in the 1975 BBC2 Floodlit Final against Dewsbury and picked up a First Division Championship medal at the end of the 1974-75 season and he added another medal after appearing in the 1975 BBC2 Floodlit Final against Dewsbury. He had a sensational game aginst Widnes in the 1976 Challenge Cup Final when the Saints defeated the Chemics by 20 points to 5 and later went on the ground breaking Australasian tour with the club. To play in the same team as the likes of Geoff Pimblett, Eric Chisnall, George Nicholls et al you had to be good.

David scored 16 tries for the Saints in his career at Knowsley Road and in 1977 David was transferred to Widnes and later played for Fulham. Rugby League is definitely in his blood. He is the grandson of former St. Helens Recreation forward Frank Bowen, who went on the 1928 Australian tour and later had a spell as a Saint himself.

In March 2020 he was on hand to receive two Heritage certificates, one for himself and another on behalf of his grandad Frank Bowen. Dave Dooley and Alex Service
