 HERITAGE NO : 453 George Johnson by Alex Service Born in Widnes, George played six matches for the Saints in twelve months in the mid 1930s. He made his debut at Leigh on 31st October 1936 in the front-row, when the visitors lost 9-13. The front-row that afternoon was Johnson, Roberts and Fletcher. His last match for the club was a First Round Lancashire Cup tie against Broughton Rangers at Knowsley Road, on 11th September 1937. Saints lost the match 0-11. George showed his versatility by playing at loose forward. We have received some valuable additional information about him from his son, Trevor: �He played Rugby Union for the British Army from 1933, including an international match against France in 1934 as a full-back. He was also the teams goal kicker. He was bought out of the army (Kings Own Royal Regiment) by St Helens Recs in February 1935 and sustained a serious shoulder injury after signing for St. Helens. After St.Helens, he went on to play professionally for Liverpool Stanley and Widnes. At the outbreak of World War Two he re-enlisted in the army, serving with the Yorks and Lancs Regiment in India and Burma. As Regimental Sergeant Major he continued to play Rugby Union for the regiment (nicknamed The Tigers) in India until his discharge from the army at the end of the war. Following a bout of malaria and now a little too old for the professional game, he took to his second passion of cricket.� He was an Artificial Buildings Process Worker and in 1939 he was living in Claremont Drive, Widnes. He died in his hometown in March 1987, aged 77. |
