Biography of Harry May |
---|
HERITAGE NO : 41 Harry May by Alex Service Harry May does not appear to be a relation of JF `James` May, the famous referee and Saints` Chairman in the 1920s. His name is bandied about in the newspapers in the early 1890s as a player for the St.Helens Recreation and Runcorn. He also represented Cheshire. Harry joined the professional Saints club from Altrincham for the start of the 1896-97 campaign and played in the first two matches of the season. The opener, at home to Rochdale Hornets, was won by 6-5. The second, at Salford, on 19th September 1896 was a scoreless draw. Harry played centre in both matches, firstly to Tom Sudlow and then Bob Doherty. After his brief sojourn at Knowsley Road, Harry settled down to work as a joiner in Cheadle, Cheshire where we find him in 1939 living in Adswood Road. His death was registered in Stockport in September 1949 at the age of 76. If anyone has any information about this player, we would like to hear from you. |
