Biography of Jack McGuiness |
---|
HERITAGE NO : 748 Jack McGuiness by SHS Jack McGuiness was by reputation a real fiery character on the field and made 69 appearances for his home town club Whitehaven, from 1950 to 1957. He began as a second-row forward, when he made his debut in September 1950, but it was to be the 1955-56 season before he truly became a first team regular at the Recreation Ground. Jack took on the hooking role, under Australian Coach Nev Emery and enjoyed some initial success in the role, so much so that he was selected at number 9 for Cumberland in both their County Championship matches in September 1957. Alas, after a run of twelve successive matches at the start of the 1957-58 campaign, he lost his place to John McKinnell. The Saints were on the lookout for cover for their incumbent hooker Tom McKinney and Jack came to Knowsley Road. He made his debut on New Year’s day against Leigh at Hilton Park. He was partnered by Alan Prescott and Abe Terry in the front-row, but couldn’t prevent the visitors going down to a disappointing 5-15 defeat. Jack proved to be mobile in the loose and scored a try in the 42-8 thrashing of Salford on 14th April 1958 and, all told, he made ten first team appearances for St Helens RFC. The 1958-59 campaign saw the Saints with a veritable surfeit on number nines on their books, all vying for a senior spot. Apart from McGuinness and McKinney, there was also Eddie Bowden and Jimmy Rose on the books. Jack was transferred to Salford and his last game in a Saints jersey was on 11th October 1958 in a 15-5 victory at Knowsley Road against Wakefield Trinity. Jack eventually returned north and passed away in December 2013, at the age of 82. |
