Biography of John Morris |
---|
HERITAGE NO : 95 John Morris by Alex Service In his early Saints' career, against Swinton, on 22nd January 1901, there is a possible clue as to his origins. For this game he took up a place on the wing, but he was essentially a half-back. The St. Helens Newspaper explained the selection thus: "Veterans like Cross and Appleton were called forth to do battle for the team, while a couple of players from the Runcorn district were included, Morris from the Recs who played wing threequarter and Johnstone, who played in the pack." He made his debut in the match at Leigh on 12th January 1901 in the left centre position. Saints lost 0-5 and in the Football Notes column in the Newspaper, criticism of the backs was damning: "the Saints lost by their weakness at threequarter and by their halves being out-classed by the other pair." Morris then played the majority of his remaining matches in the halves, scoring tries against Salford [away] and in the home match against Radcliffe at Knowsley Road on 7th December 1901. Surprisingly, his last match was against Leeds on 15th April 1905, when Edmunds partnered him at stand-off. Saints lost 5-10. It was his first match since the 11-8 victory over Leigh at Knowsley Road on Boxing Day 1901 and the last of his 24 appearances for the club. Thanks to Mike Latham for confirming the identity of this player. His obituary in June 1937, published in the Liverpool Echo, referenced his career and playing position with the Saints. In 1911, John was living in Runcorn and working as a Fish Hawker's Assistant. |
