William Myers by Alex Service

A Wigan-born forward, it is not really known where he was picked up from by the Saints. Yet a player by the name of William Myers is listed as playing three matches for the Cherry and Whites in 1907. His origin is the Leigh Rangers amateur club. This would appear to be our man, as we shall see later.

William made his debut for the Saints in a league match against Oldham at Knowsley Road on 13th September 1913. The visitors won 13-21, with William packing down in the second row with Welsh signing William Tellyn. Myers also had the distinction of scoring a try during his first match for the club. Indeed the Saints were gradually developing a team to be reckoned with. Unfortunately, the outbreak of the First World War would put an end to any progress and indeed any sense of normality for the next five years.

William was to play his last competitive game for the Saints in the infamous Challenge Cup final against Huddersfield at Oldham, when the Yorkshiremen ran riot to the tune of 3-37. It was a bit of a bridge too far for Tom Bartons St. Helens side, who at one point refused to enter the field of play unless promised bonuses for reaching the final were paid by the Committee.

Myers was a solid forward, with a bit of pace which helped him to score 12 tries in 59 appearances for the Saints. He did continue to play for them in the War Emergency League, but signed for Leigh in 1920-21, where he went on to make 8 appearances. He was also a well known licensee in the town. His Leigh RLFC Heritage Number is 261 and he made his debut against Bramley on 17 November 1920.
