Biography of Richard O Hara

HERITAGE NO : 45
Richard O Hara was a half back who played 42 matches for the club between October 1896 and April 1898. He scored seven tries for the Saints including a brace against Castleford. Richard played in the first ever Challenge Cup Final for the Saints against Batley in 1897. He also kicked one goal against Oldham.

He was born in Workington in the summer of 1874. His father, Daniel (born 1847) was a boilermaker and Richard would spend his work life following his father`s footsteps toiling with oily engines. His mother was named Margaret (nee Tweddle born 1849) and he was raised with three brothers John, David and Joseph and two sisters Mary and Elizabeth. On the 1881 Census the O`Hara family were resident at 57 South John Street, Workington.

Curiously, Richard could not be found on the 1891 Census and by the time we pick up his life again in 1901 he had married Hannah Martin (born 1874) in 1896, become a father to Daniel and played almost fifty matches for the Saints. In 1901 he had also moved to Caldewgate which is the central area of Carlisle. His occupation was listed as an engine maker and his address was 11 Lorne Street, Carlisle. In that Census year his daughter, Hannah, was born.

In 1911 he had moved to 26 Monks Close Road in Carlisle and he was listed as an iron driller. We know that his son, Daniel, followed the family tradition and became a fitter. In 1939 he was still in Carlisle with his wife. Richard died in June 1953 in Carlisle at the age of 80.

The SHS is also grateful to Mick Brown, Richard's Great-grandson, for the following snippets of information about him [courtesy Carlisle Journal]: Richard started work at Cowans and Sheldon Engineering Company before joining the Saints; after leaving the Knowsley Road club [and returning to Carlisle], he joined Workington. He now worked at Tyers railway signal implement manufacturers. He was the reserve half-back for Cumbria v Cheshire in November 1898 and played for Workington against Whitehaven, which was their first-ever clash under Northern Union rules, on 12th of that month. As well as opening the scoring with a dropped goal, he scored two tries. Richard also scored twice in the game against Askam. Richard's younger brother David played football for Shaddongate United who changed their name to Carlisle Red Rose and are now known as Carlisle United. In 1939 Richard was resident in Monksclose Road, Carlisle. He died in Carlisle in 1953 at the age of 78.
