Biography of Syd Phillips

HERITAGE NO : 738
Syd Phillips by Alex Service

Syd Phillips passed away in February 2019 at 87 years of age. He was born in Widnes in 1931 and signed for Warrington in 1952, who were deadly rivals of the Chemics. Syd was a mobile forward who could play equally effectively in the front or back rows and played 95 matches for the Wires in his four year career at Wilderspool, scoring 9 tries and a goal. Unfortunately, he missed the end to the successful 1953-54 campaign, which included a re-played Challenge Cup final and Championship final, both against Halifax.

In 1954-55, however, he was in the team, together with former Saint Jimmy Honey, that lifted the Championship trophy against Oldham. Syd joined Saints on loan in the second half of the 1956-57 season, playing four matches, before being snapped up by Keighley. He played at Lawkholme Lane from 1957-1964, consisting of 161 matches and 23 tries. He was a former postman in the Keighley area and the son of George Phillips, one of the leading referees in the early post-war years.
