Biography of Sam Plunkett

HERITAGE NO : 97
Samuel Plunkett by SHS

We have not much information to go on with this player in terms of origin, suffice to say that according to the 1891 census, [if it is the same person] he was a general labourer, living at 57, Tontine Street, shop. The document states that he was born in Manchester and, given the relative rarity of his surname, it is quite probable to assume that this is our man!

Being a general labourer gave him a head start when playing in the forwards and he took up his place in the pack for his one and only game against Widnes on 9 February 1901. Saints won 7-5, although there is no reference to Sam in the match reports. The pack that day included the brothers Tom and Billy Briers and two Cumbrian players, Joe Thompson and Bill Whiteley. If anyone has any further information about this player, we would love to receive it!
