 HERITAGE NO : 276 William Travena by Alex Service William played a total of nine matches for the First Team at St. Helens and was signed on 14th August 1920, usually the result of a successful performance in the Practice Matches before the start of the season. His first match was against Broughton Rangers a fortnight later [a 11-13 defeat for the Saints at Knowsley Road]; his last a 5-16 reversal against Swinton on 3rd December 1921. William was struck off the register on 22nd November 1923, presumably because of a lack of opportunities at stand off half with the emergence of Leslie Fairclough. He did play full-back in his final two matches for the club, however. The Rugby League Signing on Registers reveal that he lived in Thatto Heath, in Nutgrove Avenue and he signed on for the 1923-24 season, before, presumably, he retired or went back to Junior football. He was a Colliery Labourer and in 1939 he was residing in Elephant Lane, St Helens. He died in St Helens in 1955 aged 59.
