Biography of Don Vines

Don began his rugby career in South Wales where he played in the centres for Newbridge RU. he signed for Oldham in 1956 and later joined Wakefield where he gained a Challenge Cup winners medal in 1960.

Following this Final, Don Vines was a vital signing for the club playing 38 matches in the 1960-61 season mostly in the second row position. A hard uncompromising forward he brought more steel to the Saints defence in that trophy winning season. He was signed from Wakefield Trinity and made his debut against Wigan on the 7th. September, 1960.

In 38 matches for the Saints Don scored a solitary try and was renowned as a fierce tackler and a hard man with the ball in his hands.

Don was already an international forward when he signed for the Saints having played for Great Britain against France in 1959 and having scored a try in that game.

His final match for the Club was also against Wigan in the world famous Challenge Cup Final on the 13th. of May, 1961 when Don helped tame the rampant Wigan six and lay the platform for the Saints victory by 12 points to 6. At the end of the campaign he transferred back to the emerging great Wakefield Trinity side of the early 1960s.

Don was also a great heel wrestler in the 1960s and sadly died in Wakefield in September 1989 aged 57.Dave Dooley
