 HERITAGE NO : 115 Herbert Wearing by SHS The first reaction is to think that this player is a local lad who came through the ranks, given that his surname is not unusual in the St. Helens area. This is not the case. The evidence is presented in the St. Helens Newspaper and Advertiser on 9th December 1902, after Saints had lost at Hull KR: "Waring of the Kirkby Lonsdale club was introduced as partner to Liversedge". It must be said that the Saints were struggling on the field at the time and looked relegation certainties. Yet it appears that Wearing, playing right centre, received some due praise from the match report: "Of the threequarters who played at Hull KR the new man, Wearing, did very well until he met with an accident early in the second half. He is equally strong at catching and kicking but is rather slow". Wearing had recovered from his mishap by the New Year and Lancastrian, in the St. Helens Reporter [18th January 1903] after the match against Huddersfield wrote: "Foulkes was as good as usual, whilst Liversedge at threequarter played a good game, but was hardly supported, although the new recruits, Wareing [sic] and Newman ought to eventually prove good men". Wearing, who appeared in both centre positions, also played a few games on the right wing too. Fast forward to Friday 10 April and Lancastrian makes further comments about our man after Hull KR beat the Saints once more: "Wareing played fairly well at full-back and it is just as well if one, two or more are tried at full-back, as Foulkes is probably getting worse for wear. Of course, no one can go on for ever". The following week he was in the centre again for the visit to Salford, partnering Moses Green on the right and another disappointing defeat. This proved to be Waering`s last game for the club and the trail goes cold. A representative of the Kirby Lonsdale RUFC confirmed that Herbert Wearing did play for their club at the time and interested the Barrow RL club. Herbert Wearing was a joiner and wheelwright and in 1939 was resident at Mitchelgate in South Westmoreland. He died in Durham in late 1944 at the age of 44.
