Biography of Colin Whittle

HERITAGE NO : 948
Colin Whittle began his rugby league career at Blackbrook and progressed through the Saints Supporters Under 18s team and A team before making his senior debut in the 1980-81 season against Featherstone Rovers at Post Office Road. It was a tough debut and he was joined that afternoon in the front row by the redoubtable Mel James and Mike Hope. Saints lost 8-11 and generally speaking it was a time for rebuilding the team after the Dads Army years, a fact that is not lost on Colin looking back on his career. A young lad in a struggling team would be a fairly accurate assessment.

A former pupil at Parr High School, he proved to be a reliable hooker, with good distribution and an enthusiastic work ethic. Eric Ashton was the senior coach when Colin first signed in 1979 and was superseded by Kel Coslett and then Billy Benyon. His favourite game was a 17-2 victory at Craven Cottage on 21 February 1982 against an impressive Fulham side. The team arrived in London on the Saturday afternoon and the majority of the squad spent the evening at the White City dog track. According to Colin, one of the stars of that win was Roger Owen, who would take the ball up all day long!

Another game that sticks in his memory is the Good Friday victory over the Old Enemy, Wigan at Knowsley Road, after being dumped out of the Challenge Cup some weeks before by the same opponents. It was a morale-boosting 13-11 win, followed by a 21-16 success at Widnes on Easter Monday, no mean feat as it happened.

Colin played his last game in the red vee at Craven Park, when Hull KR won 31-10. Roger Owen and Gary Bottell were his fellow front rowers. Competition at Saints was tough and Colin was put on the transfer list at one stage and he just left the game he loved. But it was a temporary sojourn. After a couple of years he returned to play for Blackbrook at Open Age level, under the likes of Keith Clarke and Wilf Smith, before doing some coaching with the Second Team. During his tenure at Brook he also suffered a break of the fibula and tibula, which fortunately did not displace, thanks to his strong calf muscles!

Colin loves to talk rugby and still goes to watch Saints whenever he can. He is an astute watcher of the game and relishes talking about his time in the red vee. He was recently a proud recipient of his Heritage Certificate.
