Biography of Bill Nucky Wilcock



HERITAGE NO : 221
Bill Nucky Wilcock played 26 matches for the Saints in the 1912 to 1913 season. In these matches he played in the second row on all occasions. He scored one try in a narrow away defeat to Warrington and kicked two goals for the Saints in an emphatic away victory over Coventry.

Nucky was originally a tough prop forward who had played for Wigan from 1905 to 1912. He had played against the famous New Zealand touring team of 1908. Bill joined the army in the First World War and a bullet in his leg at Gallopoli saw an end to his rugby career. That injury may have accounted for his change of occupation between 1911 and 1939, from a Coal Hewer to a greengrocer. In 1939 Bill was living in Plank Lane, Leigh. He died in May 1946 at the age of 58.
