Biography of Joe Aspinwall



HERITAGE NO : 249
A local lad, born in Eccleston and the son of a coal dealer in Kiln Lane, Joe signed up for the Saints in World War One and played 24 matches in the War Emergenct League. The winger scored a brace of tries against local rivals Recs in one of these games. His official record begins in January 1919 with another match against St Helens Recs, which the Saints lost 3-24 to the new boys of the league. Joe was on the left wing that afternoon and his centre was Walter Groves, who became a stalwart half-back for the club.

Joe went on to play 11 official matches which brought a solitary touchdown in an away fixture against Oldham, in a second round Lancashire Cup tie at Watersheddings, when Tom Ashall was his centre. He was not exactly a prodigious scorer, although at times, the Saints threequarter line struggled to enjoy quality possession. The following week he played his final game for the first team, in a gruelling 8-10 loss at Leigh. This time, his centre was Tommy Gormley.

According to the 1911 Census, Joe worked as a Plate Glass Cutter, but by 1939 he was still living in Kiln Lane and had apparently taken over the family coal business. Previously, they had lived at nearby Millbrook Lane, also in Eccleston. He died in March 1949 at the age of 54.
