 HERITAGE NO : 910 Tommy Cunningham by Adrian Lawrenson A member of a famous St Helens family that produced three rugby league internationals: Eddie, Keiron and Tommy who all played for Wales. In Tommy’s case it was on two occasions. Tommy, who is a contemporary of the likes of Mike Nolan and Harry Pinner, appeared in the Gallie Cup match against Salford on 8 August 1975 and went on to make his senior competitive debut at Craven Park against Hull KR on 28 December 1975. In competition with Tony Karalius and Graham Liptrot, it would appear that Tommy was in the right place at the wrong time! He was a typical hooker of the modern idiom and too good a player not to be given regular first team opportunities. His final game for the club was a 14-14 draw against Rochdale on 20 August 1978 and he subsequently left the club to join Warrington, who have many happy memories of signing hookers from St Helens or former St Helens players. Think – Cotton, Fishwick, Harper, Harrison, Waller and, of course, Tommy himself! |
