Biography of Stan Lewis |
---|
HERITAGE NO : 303 Stan Lewis by Alex Service Part of a triple transfer sensation from Wales in the early 1920s, with his brother George and centre Gus Hayes, Stan Lewis was a scrum-half and played there after he turned professional at Knowsley Road. The scout who was sent to look at Welsh talent for the club, Tom Parker, was initially told to look for a centre threequarter. Yet he watched Gus Hayes guesting in the centre for Pontypool and was also taken with the half-back play of the brothers Lewis. The brothers initially wanted £500 each for signing, but the Committee turned this down. "After some bargaining," it records in the Boardroom Minutes of the time, "they agreed to accept £800 cash down, but refused to look at a cheque." The Lewis brothers were a fine combination, after all, they knew each other's play inside out. Unfortunately, the club's ventures into the Welsh market led to a serious financial problem in the early 1920s that took careful handling. The club was eventually saved from extinction by Councillor Frank McCormick, a Saints Committeeman, setting up an SOS fund which fortunately did the trick. As for Stan, he was a nippy footballer, certainly pacier than his brother and looked the part for a couple of seasons. 1922-23 was his best campaign, however, when he made 25 appearances, sharing the scrum-half berth with a local lad, Walter Groves. In 1923-24 he found competition increasing not just from Groves, but also Les Fairclough and another Welsh signing, Tommy Flynn. As brother George remembered, his brother's career had an unfortunate ending: "We were playing Warrington at Wilderspool. Mick Hanley was outside half for the Wires and came away with the ball. Stan and I both tackled went for him at the same time. I landed across Stan's knee and that was that! He had no option but to give up the game and return to Wales where he worked down the pit." The Lewis brothers lived in Pentrepiod, just outside Pontypool, at a house called Oak View. It was known locally as the house with the monkey tree and probably still is. George outlived Stan and spent the rest of his life at Pentrepiod. While they were in St.Helens, the brothers lived at 33, Oxford Street in a house presumably belonging to the St.Helens Club. All new signings from far afield seemed to live there in the 1920s In 1939 Stan was living in Mountain View, Pontypool and he was still toiling as a Collier Underground. He died in that town in December 1976 aged 77. |
