Biography of Jonty Pilkington



HERITAGE NO : 642
Jonty was a well known local character who played prop forward for the Saints some 54 times between April 1946 and September 1948. Never known to take a backward step he carried the ball strongly and possessed a solid defence. He scored two singleton tries against the same opponents, Barrow, in the same month, May 1947. He died in St Helens in November 1987, aged 65.

Alex Service interviewed Jonty in the Prince of Wales pub in 1984 and part of this is recalled here:

“I was in the Welsh Guards and I was travelling home every week to play for the Saints. They transferred me to a barracks at Chelsea. I was waiting by the Company Commander’s door to get my weekend pass signed so that I could play against Widnes, when Sergeant Major Mercer came along and asked me what I wanted. ‘Get out of my sight, Pilkington,’ he said. So that’s just what I did and never came back! [AWOL] I played rugby and renewed my boxing license and did so for eight years until I was picked up by the MPs. [Military Police] I suppose I got a reputation as a bit of a hard man and eventually got sent off 13 times in my career! I was transferred to Oldham for £1,000 (a record fee for a number eight at the time) and when I came back to play against Saints at Knowsley Road I knew I would get sent off, so I thought I’d make it early – 7 and a half minutes to be precise!”
