 HERITAGE NO : 872 David Taylor by Adrian Lawrenson David Taylor joined the Saints on a six match trial agreement from Rochdale Hornets in the spring of 1971, making his debut in the European Championship match against St Gaudens at Knowsley Road on 5 June 1971, when he was right centre to Les Jones. After a Charity fixture in the Gallie Cup against Salford, David played in three Lancashire Cup ties, together with a televised Charity Shield game against Leigh. His last match was the Lancashire Cup semi-final defeat at home to Widnes on 17th August 1971, when he played on the left, with Dave Brown outside him. He then returned to his parent club Rochdale and was later seen again at Knowsley Road as a Hornets player when they took on Saints in the final of the Floodlit Trophy on 14 December 1971. Saints won 8-2, but there is an interesting pen picture provided in the programme of David Taylor: “Signed originally from Oldham junior team Fitton Hill, David had trials with the club at the start of this season [sic] has been with the club [Rochdale] since 1965 and is a motor mechanic in private life.” Dave Taylor was delighted to receive his Player Heritage Certificate in March 2021 and still maintains an interest in rugby league. “One of my first games at the Athletic Grounds for Hornets was against Wigan and their threequarter line included the likes of Boston, Ashton, Holden and Lake, which was quite a challenge for a young player. There were a number of players who had Saints and Hornets links during my career, such as Brian Glover, Frank Myler, Kel Coslett, Peter Gartland, Tommy Pimblett, Bill Sheffield, Jimmy Measures and Jeff Heaton,” he recalls. “I remember putting my winger, Brian Glover, over for what I thought would be a try against Saints during one game, but he was held up over the line. After I had given him the pass, Jeff Heaton didn’t half clobber me and I don’t think I was pleased that we hadn’t scored! Jeff came to Rochdale with Kel Coslett in 1977. But when I originally joined Saints they had a really top team, with players like Billy Benyon and Frank Wilson in the backs.” After retiring from rugby, Dave went to Spain, where he opened a bar in Benidorm, El Castillo, which contained much of his memorabilia and was a popular destination for fans. Another rugby player, Les Dyl, also had a bar in the resort. Dave later opened another establishment in Fuengirola and also started a delivery business in the local area and always seemed to bump into familiar faces as he went about his business, such as Mal Aspey and Iain MacCorquodale, who were frequent visitors to Spain. Now back in Blighty, Dave lives in Rochdale and is an ambassador for RL Cares. |
