For the game in question, against Hunslet at Parkside in the Second Round [1st leg] of the Challenge Cup, the Saints were far from being out-classed, eventually losing a tight game 3-16. Premier [Tom Reynolds] in the St. Helens Newspaper didn't think the change at number nine was particularly relevant: 'I was not impressed by the risk that the Saints' officials took in giving preference to Taylor, a Featherstone hooker, over Noonan, but as I have seen more cup ties lost through having too much possession rather than too little, it didn't worry me. He hooked fairly, with a long straight rake, like Jack Pope used to do ' but he was too late, most of the time'. Saints went on to win the second leg 21-14 at Knowsley Road, with Dick Noonan restored to the hooking role, although Hunslet won on aggregate. Looking at Featherstone teams from the same era, there is a 'G' Taylor, who mostly played in the second row, but also had spells at hooker. Is this our man? In 1939 he was working as Colliery Boiler Fireman and living in Church Lane, Featherstone. He died in April 1954, aged 40 and his death was registered in Pontefract.
