Biography of Sione Matautia

HERITAGE NO : 1260
Sione played 124 matches in the NRL for Newcastle Knights scoring 31 tries in the process. As a youngster he captained Australian Schoolboys. Second row forward with a great sill set. He represented Australia in 2014 aged just 18.

St.Helens R.F.C. confirmed the signing of Sione Mata’utia in November 2020 on a two year deal, with the option of a third, after his release from Newcastle Knights. The 24-year-old backrower made his NRL debut for the Knights in 2014 and later that year became the youngest player to ever represent Australia, at just 18 years of age and 129 days – eclipsing Israel Folau’s record by 65 days. He went on to play three tests for the Kangaroos and another for Samoa. Sione has also represented the NRL All Stars.

Mata’utia, who was the younger brother of Castleford Tigers’ Peter as well as NRL players Chanel and Pat Mata’utia. He had captained the Knights at just 20 years of age old, on his way to amassing a total of 124 NRL appearances, scoring 31 tries. The powerful Australian, could play in a number of positions, including second row, loose forward and centre. In his career with the Knights he played for seven seasons and helped them reach the NRL finals in 2020.

It is true to say that Sione became a key member of the team as the season progressed both in attack and defence. His play was characterised by surging runs on the edge and bone crushing tackles in defence. Unfortunately, Sione missed out on a Wembley appearance with the Saints through suspension. This also robbed him of the opportunity to face his brother, Peter, who was a key member of the vanquished Castleford team that day. The Grand Final saw the Saints defeat the Catalans Dragons in a bruising encounter and Sione was very prominent for the Saints on a glorious evening at Old Trafford.
