MATCH REPORT

MATCH REPORT : After being awarded a repeat set in Saints territory, Hull FC took a f0urth minute lead as Jake Connor found Jack Walker to score on their right edge. Luke Gale converted, 6-0 Saints trailed. Saints had to respond and did so in the 16th minute. Jonny Lomax played a pass to Konrad Hurrell on his outside who broke through, he then found fellow Tongan Will Hopoate on his inside and he marked his return to the side with a try. Tommy Makinson converted, 6-6. Saints almost went behind again, but a great tackle from Makinson denied Connor Wynne down the Black and Whites left edge. Minutes later Saints got down the other end and Hopoate found Makinson with a cut-out pass to give us the lead for the first time. Makinson was unable to convert his own try, 10-6. That lead was extended just before the break. Off the back of an Agnatius Paasi break and offload downfield, Saints threw the ball from right to left, and Lomax found Louie McCarthy-Scarsbrook who went over for his first try of the season. Makinson converted, 16-6. There was still time for a further two Saints tries as the half came to a close. First, good defence from Saints forced Darnell McIntosh into touch and from the scrum the ball was moved to Hurrell and he powered his way over to increase our lead. Makinson’s conversion bounced out of the post, 20-6 Saints led. Then on the hooter, Saints worked the ball from their right edge to the middle and McCarthy-Scarsbrook went past a defender before scoring his second of the game. Makinson converted, 26-6 the Saints led at the break in East Yorkshire.

The Saints onslaught continued at the start of the second half. Saints worked the ball from right to left and Ben Davies stretched over from close range. Makinson converted, 32-6. Another try quickly followed, Hull FC kicked the restart out on the full and as we went on the attack Makinson offloaded to Hurrell down the right edge and the Tongan once again powered over from close range. Makinson converted, 38-6. Saints’ third try of the second half came in the 51st minute. Hopoate found Hurrell and he offloaded well to Makinson, our number two wasn’t going to be stopped at that point as he crossed for his second try of the afternoon. Makinson converted his own try, 44-6. Saints’ ninth try came just before the hour mark. Sione Mata’utia marking his return to the side with a powerful drive from close range. Makinson added the two, 50-6. There was still time for try number ten of the afternoon. Joey Lussick made a great break downfield before piercing through three Hull FC defenders to stroll over under the sticks. Makinson converted again, 56-6. Number eleven quickly followed. Saints worked the ball out to their left edge, and Davies swivelled before putting the ball down for his second try of the afternoon. Makinson was unable to convert but it was a hugely impressive return to form for Saints as we stretched our lead at the top of Super League to six points following Wigan’s defeat to Wakefield.
