Biography of George Acourt |
---|
HERITAGE NO : 163 George Acourt by Alex Service Relatively little is known about this particular player and we would welcome any further information to complete his profile. Looking at the 1901 Census, George Acourt was aged 17, a sheet glass worker, living in South John Street. It states that he was born in Warrington. His father was a railway signal fitter. George played three matches for the Saints on the left wing, the latter two with Cumbrian Gillie Hillen as his centre. His debut was on Christmas Day 1907, when the Saints travelled to Runcorn, only to be soundly beaten 0-19. George had a young Teddy Toole as his centre that day, with Cuddy Pennington, then in the veteran stage of his career, filling in at half-back. The Council Burial Index charts a George Acourt, who died in St Helens in June 1927 at the age of 42. George married Mary Elizabeth Meacock in April 1914. They had a son named George Henry Acourt who was born in St Helens in April 1921 and possibly died in Kings Lynn, Norfolk in January 1992. We would be delighted to hear from any of his descendants. |
