Biography of Charles Archer |
---|
HERITAGE NO : 39 Charles made his debut for Widnes in their first ever Northern Union match against Runcorn on the 7th of September, 1895. He was amongst the backline on that occasion which resulted in a notable feat by their near neighbours. In total he played 10 matches for Widnes and scored one try in the process with his final first team outing against Tyldesley occurring on the 2nd of November, 1895. Huge thanks to Steve Fox, the Widnes RL Historian for the following information on Charles. Steve finally found a reference in Athletic News in their report on Widnes’s first NU game that said Archer was the only newcomer and that he’d come from St Helens Recs. He was a winger and a later report described him as “little Archer”. Steve also looked at St.Helens Recs reports for 1894/95 which stated that Archer made a handful of appearances for the Recs and occasional games filling in for short handed opponents. Again many thanks to Steve for discovering verification of Archer’s transfer from Widnes to St.Helens courtesy of the Widnes Examiner article in the April 18th edition, see image below With his first place in the Widnes side lost, he made a mid-season move to his hometown club. His debut came on the 4th of April, 1896 in a home win over Wakefield Trinity. In total Charles played 7 matches for the Saints in that month and the final match of the first ever Northern Union season proved to be a landmark occasion for both Charles and the Club. The opponents on April 28th, 1896 were Broughton Rangers and the Saints finished the campaign in style with a resounding 26 points to nil home victory. In the match Charles bagged three tries becoming the first Saint to score a hat trick in the fledgling league. Charles Edward Archer was born in St Helens in the later months of 1872. His father James, a retired police officer, was born in Sowerby, Yorkshire and had moved to the town in the late 1860s from Stretford, Manchester. His mother, Jane, was born in Scotland. Charles was one of eight children and in 1891 they can be found living at 51 Doulton Street, St Helens. At the age of 18 Charles was working as a Labourer in Local Brickworks, doubtless the Doulton Factory at the bottom end of his Street. He later changed employment practices to work as a locomotive stoker and moved across town to live in Peasley Cross. He married local girl Elizabeth Hankinson in May 1895 and they had one daughter Lucy. All three are buried together in St Helens Cemetery. His wife died in 1936, his daughter Lucy (Etheridge) in 1956 whilst Charles finally passed away in October 1964 aged 91. |
