Biography of William Bailey

HERITAGE NO : 377
William Bailey by Alex Service

A front-row forward, Bill Bailey made his First Team debut against Bradford Northern on 30th March 1929, an easy victory for the Saints with a 47-5 success at Knowsley Road. Centre Bill Mercer scored 4 tries in the match. His last appearance was on 11th January 1930 against Halifax, once again at Knowsley Road, when Saints won 23-2. We then go forward in time to an article in the St.Helens Newspaper on 25th May 1960, when he was described as living in Chancery Lane, Parr. 'William Bailey nearly earned himself a niche in posterity by playing for the Saints at Wembley in 1930,' it says. 'That season he had won his way from the A Team to the First Team, but three weeks before that ill-feted cup final, he was supplanted by Bill Clarey.'

Despite his obvious disappointment at his non-selection for the big game, Bill played 8 matches for the First Team all told. In 1939, Bill was working as a Coal Miner and living in Chancery Lane, Parr, St Helens. He passed away in St Helens in March 1966, aged 65. May thanks to Liz Bailey for the splendid photo of William.
