Biography of William Bate

HERITAGE NO : 504
This versatile back played in the backline on twenty eight occasions during World War Two in the War Emergency League.

William was speedy enough to play on the wing and also had the skill to operate from the stand off position. His eight tries included a brace against Swinton in September 1940. In 1939 he was an Electrician living in Princess Avenue, Whiston. He died in January 1997, aged 76 and his death was registered in Knowsley. Can you help the SHS by any other personal or playing details?

Dave Dooley

Alex Service writes about his days at City Road with St Helens Recs.

William was thrown into senior rugby league by St Helens Recs at a most difficult time This is a familiar case of a young player who, as a result of Recs’ imminent demise and the outbreak of war, was unable to consolidate a First Team place with the Red, Amber and Blacks. His only match was a torrid affair against Bramley, on 21st January 1939, who won relatively easily. He was 17 years of age and was clearly ‘under the cosh’ from the more experienced Yorkshire opponents. ‘Deputy’ in the St. Helens Newspaper realised it was a difficult debut: “The display of young Bate who tackled pluckily and was never afraid to go down on the ball, was punctuated by several serious mistakes, chiefly down to the conditions, the like of which Bate had never seen in his life before.”
