Biography of Stan Bevan

HERITAGE NO : 200
Stanley Bevan by Alex Service

This is a strange tale. There is evidence to suggest that the St.Helens club were after a forward called Stanley Bevan, but signed the wrong one. This tale is repeated quite a number of times in retrospective articles about the 1910 season, when Saints were in the middle of some serious team-building. The St.Helens Newspaper carries such a tale on Friday 21st January 1949. The talk is all about Saints smashing the existing transfer record to bring Stan McCormick to Knowsley Road. Later there are a few snapshots of famous or infamous signings from the past, where the Bevan story is told once more: "The funniest signing was perhaps the Great Bevan (not Brian Bevan). Saints brought a Bevan up from Wales many years ago with a great flourish of trumpets. When he arrived the strangest thing happened. Saints had brought the wrong Bevan. The 'Star' couldn't play for nuts."

In order to build up a picture of this player we can only go off existing evidence in the newspapers or journals. We do know that he came from Treherbert. It is an interesting story but things can get embroidered over time, which we are aware of. A guy called Bevan was also on the Recs Committee when they entered the Rugby League after the First World War. I think that this is the same person, but if anyone can provide any further information it would be welcomed. The only good biographical fit was a Coal Miner who lived at 20 Kirkland Street, St Helens in 1911 which was a dwelling used by the Saints for signings from out of the area. Tom Crellin lived in the same house at the time of the 1911 Census. The fact that he played 11 matches might indicate that he possessed some talent. In any event Stan returned to South Wales and can be found living in Frogmore Street, Laugharne in 1939. His death is registered in Carmarthen in June 1945 at the age of 62.
