 HERITAGE NO : 724 Billy Blan by Alex Service When Billy Blan signed for the Saints from Leeds in January 1955 the general consensus was that he was still amongst the top six players in his position. A Test Match representative, the ex-Wigan loose-forward was bought for his craft and constructive play in the loose, together with the ability to provide a vital link between forwards and backs. �His introduction should just about make Saints pack into the heftiest in the game,� wrote the St.Helens Newspaper. Walter Delves was in contention for a regular spot in the number 13 jersey, together with a young star called Vince Karalius. Billy played 255 matches for Wigan after joining them from demob from the RAF. It is clear that he was brought in the short term to bring these two youngsters on. It is not clear what happened to Billy after leaving Saints. Billy died in Wigan in April, 2008. Any further information would be welcome. |
