Harry Briscoe holds quite a unique distinction for the St.Helens RFC, as this extract from the St.Helens Newspaper after his debut against Swinton: "Those of us who trudged up to Knowsley Road on Saturday to give the old club a cheer actually saw history beeing made. History in the annals of the club and history for the whole of the rugby league. Never before in its long history has the club fielded a player of so slender years as Harold Briscoe, the former Parr Central School player and St.Helens Town Schoolboys captain. Fathers of the rugby league and historians have been looking up records to see if they could find another case of where a boy, six weeks after his sixteenth birthday has turned out for a senior rugby league team without ever playing in the A team or even a trial game. Briscoe was signed on his schoolboy forms and he replied on Saturday by giving a sample of 80 minutes of honest-to-goodness schoolboy rugby." At the time of his debut Harry gained the distinction of becoming the youngest ever first team Saint. Just six years later Joe Ball surpassed Harry’s feat when he made his debut at the age of 16 years and 16 days.

It should be noted that another Boy Wonder, Albert Pimblett played for the Recs at 17, also without playing in the A team.
It is extremely sad to report that Harry Briscoe was one of the last casualties of the Second World War.
