Biography of Frank Brown

HERITAGE NO : 666
Born in Traverse Street, Fingerpost, Frank Stanford Brown attended Holy Trinity and Higher Grade schools, from where he captained the St Helens Schoolboy’s rugby league team that embarked on a trail-blazing French tour in 1935. Frank enlisted in the Army in the Second World War, serving in North African and Italian campaigns. Very much an all-round sportsman, he played in services soccer with the legendary Tom Finney and with St Helens Town and declined trials with Bolton Wanderers and Matt Busby's Manchester United for business reasons.

On demob, he took over the estate agency in Claughton Street when his brother John, the Founder, passed away. He went on to become one of the few to have played soccer and rugby league for the town, when he appeared in both the A team and seniors at Knowsley Road. A forceful centre, essentially, he made his debut at stand-off against Liverpool Stanley on 22nd November 1947, when the home team won 10-7. Another local product, Frank Beesley, was his partner at scrum-half.

His three remaining games for the first team were all in the left centre position, where he partnered Eddie Cheetham and Mick Lawrence, in his last match, an 8-2 success against new boys Workington at Knowsley Road. In later years he joined the Board of St Helens RFC and subsequently became a Life Member of the club. He remained a keen sportsman, with snooker, table tennis and crown green bowls a speciality. He was also a former Captain of Grange Park Golf Club and an estate agent for 50 years. Frank passed away in 2007.
